FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ACUVUE® and ACUVUE® 2?

Both ACUVUE® and ACUVUE® 2 Brand Contact Lenses provide excellent all-around lens performance. ACUVUE® was launched in 1987 and continues to be the #1 contact lens in the world. ACUVUE® 2 Brand, introduced in 1999, is currently the #1 prescribed lens for new fits.

Both lenses are made from the same material—etafilcon A. With ACUVUE® 2, edge height has been reduced while the mid-periphery has been enhanced. These design changes improve handling and comfort for many patients. This ability to combine superior handling and all-day comfort with outstanding visual performance has resulted in practitioner enthusiasm and patient satisfaction.

Helps protect against transmission of harmful UV radiation to the cornea and into the eye.
WARNING: UV-absorbing contact lenses are NOT substitutes for protective UV-absorbing eyewear such as UV-absorbing goggles or sunglasses because they do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area. You should continue to use UV-absorbing eyewear as directed. NOTE: Long term exposure to UV radiation is one of the risk factors associated with cataracts. Exposure is based on a number of factors such as environmental conditions (altitude, geography, cloud cover) and personal factors (extent and nature of outdoor activities). UV-Blocking contact lenses help provide protection against harmful UV radiation. However, clinical studies have not been done to demonstrate that wearing UV-Blocking contact lenses reduces the risk of developing cataracts or other eye disorders. Consult your eye care practitioner for more information.

What base curve / keratometric (K) reading relationship exists with ACUVUE® 2 8.3 mm and 8.7 mm?

As with any of the Johnson & Johnson Vision Care family of lenses, there are no set K-measurements recommended with any specific base curve. Choosing a base curve should be based on the practitioner's own fitting philosophy. ACUVUE® 2 provides flexibility to choose between a flatter or steeper base curve. Assessing the lens with the use of the slit lamp and performing a push-up test is the most accurate way of determining appropriate base curve and fit.

Will Johnson & Johnson Vision Care discontinue ACUVUE® in the near future?

ACUVUE®, the first disposable contact lens, was launched in 1987 in Florida and in 1988 throughout the rest of the United States. ACUVUE® established a new category of contact lenses with its introduction, bringing disposability to contact lenses. The new introduction of ACUVUE® ADVANCE™ Brand Contact Lenses with Hydraclear™ is establishing another new standard in daily wear comfort for ACUVUE®. Many ACUVUE® patients are trading up to ACUVUE® ADVANCE™ Brand with HYDRACLEAR™ for whiter eyes and better end of day comfort.
